What is the Innovation of Positive Psychology?

Although as a condition, positive psychology is encountered in various contexts, it is nevertheless a separate field in the science of psychology, officially since 1998.

The need for specific study, research, and application of conclusions about factors that improve the psychology of people individually and as a group (as a society) prompted founders Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Christopher Peterson, Barbara Fredrickson and Martin Seligman to create Positive Psychology.

How is it different from conventional Psychology?

These scholars believed that they needed to be differentiated from classical psychology, which focused on psychoanalysis and psychological behavior, which, as methods, emphasized negative, inappropriate behavior and thinking, as well as mental illness.

On the contrary, the perspective of these scientists focuses on happiness, well-being, positivity in life, and thoroughly examines every factor that contributes to these goals.

According to the very founders of this field of Psychology, Positive Psychology is defined as “… the scientific study of the positive function and development of man at multiple levels, which include biological, personal, social, institutional, cultural and global factors of life”.

The pursuit of this field is not, of course, the recognition of conventional psychology and the principles that govern it, but by focusing on those that contribute to the positive development of man, Positive Psychology seeks to balance approaches that focus exclusively on psychological abnormality, and broaden the scope within which a problem can be solved or a combination thereof.

Where does Positive Psychology focus on?

Positive Psychology puts forward what man plans or hopes for his future, not so much as those that may have defined him in his past. Experts believe that this change in the time orientation introduced by Positive Psychology can have a catalytic role in achieving personal happiness here.

In this way, the past can be accepted, excited and optimistic about the future, but also a sense of joy and satisfaction for the present.

Research and intervention in Positive Psychology is based on four principles that relate to positive experiences, the reinforcement of positive elements of human nature, positive relationships and positive social networking systems.

It is an industry that is constantly growing, expanding its fields of interest and trying to bring solutions at the individual and social level, away from dogmatism and 'formalized' methods. 'Happy life is an individual creation that cannot be copied from a recipe,' says M. Csikszentmihalyi in a disgust, explaining in two words the logic behind Positive Psychology.

In few words

Our social bonds with our family, partner, friends, relationships in the workplace or other group settings, as well as physical activity and meditation are among the key tools that can provide us with personal and general happiness, in accordance with the principles of Positive Psychology.

So in a world where daily anxieties and problems in one degree or another do not 'sadden' any home, Positive Psychology has something to say about a world that has to contend and learn to enjoy its happiness.
